Applications for Intern posts commencing July 2024 are invited through a single, national recruitment campaign.

Intern training provides medical graduates with the opportunity to experience the reality of patient care in a range of healthcare settings.

The Health Service Executive National Recruitment Service (NRS) will run and manage this campaign.

To support you through all stages of the Medical Intern Application Process and to answer any questions you may have in relation to your application, we provide a full description of what you can expect and when it will happen. You can find this information in “A Guide to Application and Appointment to Intern Training in Ireland Stage 1 – Amended”.

This Guide outlines the regulations under which the recruitment campaign will be run, what you are required to do, when you are required to do it, what the next steps are and what you might expect to happen.

Overview of the Medical Intern Application Process for Intern Posts commencing July 2024

The application process will take place in two stages:

Application Stage 1:

This is an online application.

Applicants may apply for an Intern post from Tuesday, 24th October 2023 until 5pm on Tuesday, 7th November 2023 (GMT)

Application Stage 2:

This is an online application.

Applicants deemed eligible at Stage 1 will be invited by NRS to proceed and apply for Stage 2.  This stage will open on Friday, 16th February 2024 and applicants will submit their Intern post choices and Intern Training Network preferences.

This means the date that your centile, based on your overall degree award OR overall exams, can be provided to NRS by the Dean / Head of your Medical School.

This means the date you will have received your basic (primary) medical qualification, which clearly displays the full date of conferral

In preparation for the application process:

What you will need:

  • a PC/Laptop/Mobile Device with internet access
  • a valid email address
  • access to a mobile telephone number from which you receive text messages
  • the application form is best viewed using the most up-to-date version of Google Chrome, Safari or Mozilla Firefox. Internet Explorer is no longer supported please use Microsoft Edge instead.

NRS recommends that you download all relevant documentation, as outlined below, to your PC/Laptop/Mobile Device prior to commencing the online application form.  You will be prompted at various stages in the online application form to upload the following documents.

Please ensure all forms are completed in full, signed by the relevant person, scanned, and saved to your PC/Laptop/Mobile Device. We recommend when saving the documents, you name them as follows, i.e. Section D Form, Section E Form.

NRS advises that documents may be saved in pdf, image, or Word format. Please note the maximum file size for each scanned document that you upload, as part of your online application, is 5MB.

In addition to the above, you will be prompted at various stages in the online application form to upload the following documents, which must be scanned and saved to your PC/Laptop/Mobile Device, where applicable to you. We recommend when saving the documents, you name them as follows, i.e. GNIB/IRP Card, Passport Photo, etc.

  1. Photograph page of your passport (please refer to guide)
  2. Current and relevant GNIB/IRP Card (if applicable)
  3. Section D – Conferral Date and Centile Confirmation Date Form (Applicants from Medical Schools outside the Republic of Ireland ONLY)
  4. Section E – Intern Employment Eligibility Assessment Payment Form (Applicants from Medical Schools outside the Republic of Ireland ONLY, please refer to guide)
  5. IEEA Bank Payment Confirmation (Applicants from Medical Schools outside the Republic of Ireland ONLY, please refer to guide)

In order to apply for Stage 1 of the Medical Intern process, you will need to complete the online application form. This will take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

There are mandatory questions in the Online Application Form. These are questions that all applicants must answer. If you do not answer the mandatory questions, the system will not allow you to submit your Application Form.  An error message will appear on the relevant screen to highlight the question(s) remaining unanswered. Once all mandatory questions have been answered and all documents relevant to you are uploaded, you will be able to submit your Online Application Form.

You must complete and submit the dedicated Online Application Form by the closing date and time of 5pm on Tuesday, 7th November 2023.

No other versions of applications will be accepted e.g. written, postal, email, CV, etc. Applications will not be accepted after this date and time and no exceptions will be made.

Please note the online application is designed to display in most modern web browsers. NRS recommends that you ensure your PC/Laptop/Mobile device can support the following Browsers i.e. Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Edge (major versions released in the last year).

NRS strongly recommends that you take the opportunity to review your application prior to submission to ensure the details contained within your online application are correct. You will have an opportunity to review your application prior to submission by selecting the back buttons on the screen.  Once you are satisfied that your application is complete, please ensure you select the SUBMIT button.

2. The information we process

Please note that information contained in your online application and the form itself may be passed to Intern Training Networks, Medical Schools, the Medical Council of Ireland, the National Doctors Training and Planning (HSE NDTP), MIU, IEEA Facilitators, Intern Network Executive and to prospective employing authorities, including non-HSE employing authorities (such as voluntary hospitals), for recruitment purposes only.

I have completed and submitted my Online Application Form – What happens next?

Once you click on the SUBMIT button, you will receive a receipt to the email address you have provided in your application. This is your receipt of the application and it is important that you retain it carefully. It is your record of proof that you applied for this recruitment campaign. This email will also provide your unique Candidate ID Number which you will need when communicating with us. You will also receive a separate email with a copy of your completed application. The HSE’s NRS checks eligibility after 5pm on Tuesday, 7th November 2023.

If you don’t receive your email receipt of the application or the email containing your completed application, please check your Spam or Junk e-mail folder just in case the email receipt of the application has been delivered there instead of your Inbox. If your email receipt of application has gone to your Spam/Junk email folder, simply select the email and mark it Not Spam/Not Junk, this should allow future messages to get through to your Inbox.

A single application per individual is permitted. If you have submitted more than one application, we will accept the last one received from you prior to the closing date and time.
